Wheeler takes a hand for Badshot Lea

BADSHOT LEA 1, GUILDFORD CITY 1

RELEGATED Badshot Lea, after losing 4-0 at runners-up Westfield on Saturday, gained a battling draw against Guildford City on Monday in the Combined Counties League Premier Division.

City missed a host of chances, but when Tom Bingham put them ahead in the 88th minute it seemed that the visitors would come away with all three points.

Then, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Baggies substitute Luke Wheeler stepped up to take a free-kick and curled a beautiful shot round the wall and into the top corner.

It had been an entertaining end-of-season encounter. Guildford had most of the possession, but it was far from being one-way traffic and a powerful shot from Benga Ogunseye forced Kallum Lunn into a good save.

City again had the better of the play in the second half, but Bingham and Greg Haydon missed the best of their many openings.

Then, just to show that Badshot Lea were still very much in the game, Ogunseye twice sent shots whistling narrowly past the upright.

Bingham’s goal seemed to have won the game at the death, but then Wheeler took a hand with his spectacular free-kick.

Badshot Lea visit AFC Hayes in their final game this Saturday.

Farnham miss

50-point target

Farnham Town are safe in the Premier Division, but will miss their target of 50 points after losing twice over Easter.

On Saturday, Spelthorne Sports beat Farnham 2-0, thanks to first-half goals from Jake Flatman and Qaseem Sotonwa.

On Easter Monday, Farnham suffered their fourth successive defeat, beaten 3-0 by Westfield who clinched second spot in the league with goals from Max Blackmore, James Cottee and Tarome Hemmings.

After their dismal run, Farnham will be keen to finish the campaign with a decent result at Chertsey this Saturday. The sides are level on 46 points.
