A cyclist on his way to work was sent flying onto the road when a BMW allegedly swerved into his path before speeding away.

Steven Byers, 44, was cycling along Woking Road shortly after the Burdenshott Road junction at around 8am on Wednesday, August 5, when the incident happened.

The residential manager for Thames Way was travelling from Aldershot towards Sheerwater at around 18mph when he noticed a distinctive-coloured BMW approaching from behind.

Mr Byers said the driver began “beeping aggressively” before pulling alongside him.

“The car came up beside me so close I couldn’t extend even my arms,” he said.

He said the BMW then swerved into his path, knocking him off his bike and sending him flying onto the road.

The driver allegedly continued towards Woking without stopping.

A motorist travelling behind the BMW stopped to help Mr Byers, while Surrey Police officers also came across the collision while carrying out their duties and stopped at the scene.

Mr Byers was left with cuts and bruises, including significant scratches to his back, while his £4,000 bike was completely written off.

But the physical injuries are not the only aftermath of the crash.

Mr Byers said the incident has badly shaken his confidence and left him questioning whether he will cycle to work again.

“The whole thing was over in minutes but it all felt so very intentional,” he said.

“Luckily I’m okay, but the next person might not be so lucky. There are so many ramifications of what could have happened.”

At this stage, no one has been identified or arrested and the BMW itself has not been identified.

Mr Byers is now appealing for the motorist who stopped to help, as well as anyone else who witnessed the incident, to come forward.

Anyone who was travelling along Woking Road between 7.55am and 8.10am on August 5 and may have dashcam footage is also asked to contact Surrey Police.

Mr Byers said: “I really just hope we can find this chap.”
