A VEHICLE which is believed to be linked to various criminal offences failed to stop for police during a series of checks carried out in Milford, last Monday.

Police say further enquiries are being carried out into the incident. During the day, more than 50 drivers were stopped for speeding.

The initiative, which was carried out between 8am and 12.30pm, resulted in 102 vehicles being stopped.

The operation was carried out in partnership with Surrey County Council, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), representatives from Waverley Borough Council’s taxi licensing department and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

The majority of the drivers who were stopped, including 55 for speeding, 26 for not wearing a seatbelt and two for using a mobile phone, opted to take part in a questionnaire highlighting the potential implications of speeding in an attempt to re-educate them about their driving habits. Seven drivers stopped for speeding were issued with EFPN (endorsable fixed penalty notices).

Roadworthiness checks were carried out by VOSA on all the vehicles which were stopped.

Pc Matt Redfern said: “The aim of the day is to educate motorists who are speeding and committing other driving offences, and help demonstrate why it’s important to drive safely. I hope the experience of being spoken to and asked about their actions will make motorists really stop and think, drive safely and considerately and slow down.

“It was an extremely worthwhile operation and I would like to thank all the Surrey police staff and officers, as well as all the partner agencies involved.”
