A crafty woman is cooking up a storm after opening a new workshop in an East Hampshire village.

Selborne has given a warm welcome to Kate Hughes Creative as the open studio and gallery has replaced the former village store.

Visitors will find handmade gifts and can take part in a variety of art and craft workshops ranging from cold wax and oil painting to glass fusion, Indian block printing, and natural dyeing among others.

Kate, who has moved to Selborne from Farnham, has always been artistic but the pandemic prompted a career change. Having taught cookery for 25 years she took up crafts in a big way, enrolling at West Dean College and joining the Alton Arts Society.

She said: “As a result of Covid I couldn’t do the cookery anymore so I had a lot of lovely time on my hands.

“I started making things and started courses at West Dean College. I did a foundation course and that led to a degree.

“I was looking for a studio when a friend of mine who runs a glass fusion business told be about this place – the rest is history as I moved in two weeks ago.”

Kate describes her venture as “a space for creative workshops” with Gelli print painting, ecoprinting and pottery painting among the other many options.

She wants to make the place a “hub for local artists” with exhibitions and a wall featuring locally produced pieces.

“Selborne is a really arty place,” said Kate, who is looking forward to getting involved in village life.

“I’ve had so many people come to say hello. It’s just a really artistic community and it’s got that feel about it.”

A launch party will take place from 5pm on Friday, September 4, visit www.katehughescreative.co.uk for more details.
