MORE than 100 supporters from across the country took part in Surrey Cannabis Club’s fourth annual ‘protestival’ in Stoke Park, Guildford.
The ‘peaceful protest picnic’ was due to last from 1pm to 6pm but was cut short following a call to Surrey Police at 4.45pm reporting “suspicious activity in the park”.
A police spokesman said: “Officers were sent to the location and the majority of visitors left of their own accord.
“A 22-year-old man from London was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and has been released on bail pending further enquiries, to return on November 3.”
The Surrey Cannabis Club was founded in 2012 as part of UK Cannabis Social Clubs, which is campaigning to de-crimialise personal use for all adults and legalise medicinal use.
Surrey club manager Alan Pavia said: “It was a peaceful event with lots of information being handed out to onlookers. We had attendance from many cannabis clubs, including Hampshire, Birmingham, Brighton, and East London. A litter picking team was sent out after to make sure there was no mess left behind.
“One of the aims of the event was to provide an open forum which anyone could attend to discuss any of the issues surrounding cannabis, both positive and negative.
“We wanted to actively encourage non-consumers of cannabis to attend so they could inform themselves of the issues, ask questions and interact with members of the pro-cannabis movement.
