GUILDFORD Cathedral is set to stage a large-scale refugee response to the challenges of the current desperate crisis, next week.

The free event will explore how individuals and parishes can best respond to the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East.

A panel of expert speakers includes Maurice Wren, CEO of the Refugee Council, Christine Elliott, director of World Church Programmes, and Martin Kettle, home affairs policy adviser for the Church of England at the meeting on Tuesday, October 20, from 9am-1pm.

The Diocese of Guildford’s safeguarding experts will also be present, as well as members of several local authorities. The Bishop of Guildford called for an increased allocation of refugees to the UK, and for  parishes to pray, educate, act, campaign, and engage – PEACE.

The Rt Revd Andrew Watson said : “This is not a new problem, nor is it one which can be quickly resolved, and so it is crucial that we can address the immediate humanitarian challenges, and also consider the longer-term cultural needs of those for whom the UK will soon be called home.”

All are welcome to attend, and to enjoy a free cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The event is free, but a collection to defray costs will be taken.

Following the talks, there will be an opportunity for those attending to ask questions and engage in discussion.

Places are available on a first-come-first-served basis, and can be booked at: www.cofeguildford.org.uk
