We are being treated every day with the wonderful sight of large flights of geese passing over Castle Street at around 9am and returning at around 6pm.

They usually fly in three or four successive V groups each of 20 to 30 birds. They are noisy enough to be heard just before they pass over.

They appear to be flying into the morning sun and returning into the setting sun and on this current flight path over us it is happening this year on an unprecedented scale.

It has become a repetitive daily routine. Where are they setting off from and heading to? Could it be that water levels in ponds and lakes have fallen to critical levels to disturb their normal routines? Or are they just part of an unusually large migration this year? Could any birdwatchers help to explain?

We have just seen them off this Sunday morning and keenly await their return this evening.
