MIDHURST Rother College year nine footballers have been crowned Western West Sussex District Champions for the first time in their history

They took the league by storm and remained unbeaten before beating nearest placed rivals Chichester High School for Boys in a top-of-the-table clash to secure the title.

MRC director of sport Simon Hills said: “All of the students played consistently well across the whole season. Their dedication to training and a positive team attitude has enabled them to fulfil their potential. We really believe there are some names to watch out for in the future.”

The students are trained by Southampton FC’s Academy. The elite footballers in all year groups benefit from working closely with the Saints coaching team with weekly sessions, and are eligible to wear the Premiership club’s kit, as well as being given the opportunity to visit the St Mary’s stadium and attend home fixtures.

The programme in its second year has seen improvements in the players’ skills and vastly improved results across all year groups, according to Mr Hills.
