Peper Harow’s softball cricket team the Palominos are pushing boundaries for women’s sport.
The team were formed early this year, with a focus on encouraging and inspiring women of all ages and abilities to participate in a team sport, to promote the benefits of mental health and wellbeing.
Having started the season indoors, the ladies are enjoying being out in the sun and playing their first season in the I’Anson League.
There are many opportunities to play games. The team are currently organising friendlies for those who want to enjoy playing the sport in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
League matches are played on Sundays for those looking for a more competitive game.
Sponsored by Active Surrey and Surrey Heath Borough Council, the team are looking to welcome new players, whether beginners to the sport or women who have played previously at some level.
The club aim to cater for all and support women in the local community, with a focus on friendship and fun.
This includes plenty of socials and the odd pool contest.
Peper Harow Cricket Club chairman Steve Bradley said: “When we were approached by Shaz about whether Peper Harow would be interested in having a women’s team, we jumped at the chance, as it was a next step in our plans to build the club even further.
“We instantly decided to enter the team in the I’Anson Women’s Softball League, and Shaz got going finding players to make up a meaningful squad.
“To see the passion and energy from all of the women from the start has been incredible, and the enthusiasm to build for the future was there to see at an early stage.
“Women’s cricket is growing so quickly and we are proud to be able to offer a platform for these women to play cricket, and support a friendly and diverse team who embrace inclusivity.
“They show great dedication and commitment, and certainly bring great value to our club and, of course, the community.
“All our members have embraced the women’s section and together we are looking forward to seeing them improve, grow using competitive cricket as the goal, and play with a smile on their faces.
“Of course, we are always looking to increase our numbers further, and the short- and long-term vision would be to have two softball teams and, when the time is right, to have one hardball team.”
