THE death of Wrecclesham Cricket Club has been greatly exaggerated. It was announced that the club had folded at this month’s I’Anson ADM and a letter to the Herald, printed last week, from former captain Henry Bate detailed the ‘acrimonious end to the club’.

However, a letter in response from Andy Warner, chairman of the Wrecclesham Sports and Social Club committee, reveals that Wrecclesham CC will continue as an I’Anson club next season and this has been confirmed in a brief statement from the competition which praises the efforts of Joe Boniface, another former Wrecclesham captain.

The statement says: ‘The I’Anson Management Committee is happy to announce that Wrecclesham CC has regrouped, thanks to the passion and perseverance of Joe Boniface. It will be entering a team in Division 5.’

Wrecclesham, who finished bottom of Division 1 last season, re-enter as a Division 5 team, with Grayshott CC requesting that their young 4th XI remain in Division 6.

Andy Warner writes to the Herald:

I am writing as Chairman of the Wrecclesham Sports and Social Committee in response to the article about the withdrawal of Wrecclesham Cricket Club from the I’Anson League as printed in the Herald, which gave the impression that things were ‘closing down’ in Wrecclesham.

We have a tightly knit, hard-working committee which organises the social side of the sports pavilion as well as supporting the interest of our sports clubs, Wrecclesham Football Club and Wrecclesham Cricket Club.

Your article reads as the complaints of two people who have now left the club, for their own reasons, and does not cover the views of those who remain committed to sport, including cricket, in Wrecclesham.

Further to a meeting of some hard-working members within Wrecclesham Cricket Club and Wrecclesham Sports & Social Club we are delighted to confirm that there will be a team representing Wrecclesham Cricket Club in the I’Anson Cup competition next season.

We would like to put on record that at no stage in the process were either the remaining members of the cricket club or the Sports and Social club aware of the letter being presented to the Herald.

We are pleased that the cricket club are able to offer continuity to its playing members and we look forward to a reciprocal and long-term relationship. Any potential players wishing to represent the club are encouraged to contact the club directly.

Andy Warner

Chairman Wrecclesham Sports & Social Club
