FERNHURST Primary School Year 1 pupil Florence Naomi and her classmates inspired a village charity event that raised £1,600 for two charities helping victims of the Australian bushfires.

Her mother Lucy, who worked with the school to put on the event in Fernhurst Village Hall on January 18, said: “I think it’s amazing what a community can do when they all get together.

“About 100 people came and we raised money with ticket sales, a raffle, toy and book stall, sweet stall and a craft corner.

“Businesses donated raffle prizes and Deer Class teacher Georgie Morris sang a song the kids absolutely loved.

“Funds will be divided between Wires wildlife rescue and rehabilitation charity in Australia, and The Australian Red Cross.”
