“We know business owners are busy, so we thought we’d take a proactive approach to helping them prepare for Making Tax Digital,” said Paul Underwood, director of Morris Crocker and BNI member.

“We’ve been actively testing a range of software platforms to understand which tools best suit different types of businesses, from straightforward rental portfolios to more complex self-employed operations. Tools chosen for their suitability include Xero, Dext and Hammock.

“Off the back of that research, we have also been running a series of free webinars designed to give local businesses clear, jargon-free guidance. The sessions explain what MTD involves, demonstrate suitable software options, and help business owners understand the best route for their circumstances.”

Many self-employed individuals and landlords are unsure what Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA) will mean in practice.

Underwood explains: “From April 6, 2026, those with income over £50,000 will be required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. A year later, the threshold drops to £30,000.

“In many ways, BNI has inspired this proactive support. Building trusted relationships and adding value beyond core services is what BNI is all about. By helping business owners prepare and make informed decisions, we aim to reduce uncertainty and give the local community confidence as the digital tax landscape evolves.

“The message is simple really – don’t wait until the deadline is here. Preparation now will make the transition far smoother.”
