MORE than 200,000 new blood donors are needed each year and NHS Blood and Transplant is urging during National Blood Week, from June 19-25.

Last year nationwide, 900,000 people gave blood, of whom 19,154 were Surrey residents and donated at least once.

But new donors are vital to ensure the right mix of blood groups to meet patient need is there in the years to come.

There is a particular need for more young people to give blood, as they will become the next generation of donors.

Currently half of all donors in England are aged over 45.

More black donors are also needed. Last year, around 10,000 gave blood, but 40,000 more are needed to help save the lives of patients with sickle cell disease.
