KIDS took over at Haslemere Museum last Friday as part of a nationwide challenge run by the Children’s Commissioner for England.

Year six pupils from Northchapel School enjoyed being in charge at Kids in Museums Takeover Day, when they were able to shadow people in a range of different jobs, including helping with the early years session, visiting the archive room to choose Christmas cards for a museum display and overseeing various tasks in the museum shop.

Acting as museum visitor hosts, they successfully ran front-of-house operations and greeted visitors when they arrived. At the end of their day in charge, pupils were presented with certificates as a reward for all their hard work.

Museum education officer Kay Topping said: “The children had a fantastic time participating in this exciting project – it was both educational and fun.

“It was a great opportunity for them to get really stuck in and up close to history, heritage and all the wonderful things museums can offer.

“Many of our visitors are children, so we are delighted to give them a chance to show us how it’s done.”
