A South Farnham School pupil has become a hero of The Hebrides after reportedly becoming the youngest person to complete a Scottish long-distance trail.
Nine-year-old Joshua Pinkney took the high road with his father, Nathan, as they spent part of the summer walking the 107-mile Skye Trail.
The budding Chris Bonington has decided to mark the achievement by raising money for his junior school and the Skye Mountain Rescue Team.
“We did the Ridgeway in Easter in preparation for the Skye Trail, but we both wanted to do something that made him the youngest – Joshua likes a challenge,” said his dad.
“The Skye Mountain Rescue Team is a great cause, as they do such a great job and it’s relevant to the area.
“If we got into trouble in that landscape we would be rescued by that team – literally the week before, 20 people were rescued on the route we were walking.
“We thought as we did it, and it was such a great achievement, we would like to support them as well.”
The father and son prepared for their Scottish adventure by walking the Ridgeway during Easter. They spent seven days walking the length of the Isle of Skye from Broadford in the south to Duntulm in the north, covering 20 miles in a day on one occasion.
Nathan added: “We carried everything we needed on our backs, camped along the way and crossed some of the most spectacular and challenging terrain on Skye.
“It was an extraordinary journey for a nine-year-old and an experience neither of us will ever forget.
“There were difficult moments, plenty of laughs, incredible views and that wonderful feeling each evening of knowing we had completed another day.”
