SURREY schools were celebrating another good year for GCSE results, with both the state and independent sector reporting some outstanding achievements by their pupils.

The national trend of a decline in top-end grades being awarded and students being marked down in their English exams was not reflected in school results locally.

Following the release of the results last week, Linda Kemeny, Surrey County Council's member for children and learning, said: "Our schools, and the teachers who work in them, are among the best in the country and once more they have helped pupils achieve excellent GCSE results.

"It's a pleasure to see the hard work and commitment of so many young people rewarded. Good grades are the result of teamwork between all those involved, including teachers, parents, governors and pupils

"I'm sure everyone will join me in congratulating the students on their successes."
