FORMER Haslemere Mayor Brian Howard enjoyed a ‘very special occasion,’ when he was personally presented with his MBE by The Queen, earlier this month.

Brian was accompanied for the investiture at Windsor Castle by his wife Diana, and their children Melissa and Douglas.

Melissa said: “It was an incredible and very special occasion, that will be remembered and treasured by us all.”

Brian was rewarded for many years of service to the town – and still counting – in this summer’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

After being appointed a Member of the British Empire, he said: “It’s a great honour.

“It’s nice to be recognised but I’m only the tip of the iceberg.

“It’s also recognition to all the people I have cajoled into helping me with projects over the years.”

Brian was recognised for 35 years of ‘selfless service’ to the town.

He has been involved with the Haslemere Chamber of Trade and Commerce since 1983 and founded popular events in the town, including the annual carol concert and Christmas market.

He also raises funds for the Christmas lights and puts them up himself to save money.

Brian is also known now for his highly successful Haslemere Hogs community arts project, which raised £35,000 in 2017 for various charities.

His sequel project in 2018 – Haslemere Hares – looks set to be an even bigger success and is currently on course to top £40,000.

•Furniture retailer Collingwood Batchellor is hosting a Festive Fun night of comedy and live music from 7pm on Friday (December 7) for Haslemere Hares, to raise cash for three charities in the town. Tickets are on sale now at the High Street store and Marley Flowers.
