THE legendary Hawker Hurricane staged a thrilling mini-display at Dunsfold Park to show off one of the treats in store at Wings & Wheels 2013, on August 24-25.
There are currently only 12 Hurricanes around the world still flying and the Hangar 11 Collection's rare war bird was originally built in 1942 and has been restoed to stock Mk IIB fighter-bomber status. Hangar 11 chief pilot Peter Teichman (right) put the veteran through its paces for the air and auto show preview this week. He will be back for the show proper, when he will also be flying an American P-40 Kittyhawk, which was also used by the RAF.
"I've been doing an aviation display at Wings & Wheels every year since it started and I started flying war birds in the 1990s," he said. "The Hurricane was the true hero of the Battle of Britain – not the Spitfire – and shot down two-thirds of the enemy planes.
"The Spitfire took the glory but the Hurricane did the work. The Hurricane has great provenance and it's a wonderful aeroplane to fly."
