IT was a clean sweep for the ladies at the Witley Gardening Association’s Spring Show, with all the cups and trophies being awarded to female exhibitors.

The Chichester Hall was ablaze with colour, thanks to a fantastic display of daffodils, tulips and other spring flowers despite the tricky weather conditions over the past few months.

Valerie Herring triumphed in a hotly-contested class for the best exhibit of ‘Mount Hood’ daffodils, in which the judge noted the particularly high standard of entries, while Jill Long’s azalea was judged best pot plant, winning her the Witley Evergreens Cup.

Show tables in the cookery section were laden with delicious treats, and novice exhibitor Pauline Stone won the David Swift Memorial trophy for the best craft exhibit, with her first ever entry.

Witley Brownies and Guides excelled themselves again with their craft exhibits on the theme of the Commonwealth Games, which especially impressed the judges.

Witley Gardening Association Chairman Georgina Ellerton said: “Whatever the weather throws at us, our members never fail to impress and it was wonderful to see so many entries at the show.”

Cup and trophy winners were: George Edwards Cup (best exhibit of daffodils/narcissi): Ros Pike; Norman Cup (best exhibit of Mount Hood daffodils fom bulbs supplied by the AGM): Valerie Herring; Witley Evergreens Cup (best flowering Spring pot plant): Jill Long; Redhead Bowl (best flower arrangement on theme of ‘Winter’s Over’): Ann Pearson; Witley WI Flower Arranging Cup (best flower arrangement): Margaret Ashwell; David Swift Memorial (Best exhibit in the craft section): Pauline Stone; Witley WI Cookery Cup (best exhibit in the cookery section): Margaret Ashwell.
