SURREY County Council had to pay £861,836 in compensation to motorists for damage caused by potholes and uneven road surfaces in 2010.

The figure was more than 10 times higher than neighbouring West Sussex, which paid out just £75,000 for the same year. Hampshire also paid out far less.
