THE Haslemere branch of the Royal Society of St George, and representatives from Camelsdale Junior School, took part in the society’s national parade of remembrance at The Cenotaph, in Whitehall, London, last month.

Branch chairman Martin Coakley said: “The school party led by headteacher Sarah Palmer, with headboy Harry Jarvis, headgirl Kitty Newton, and her deputy Freya Carless, formed up with the other members of the society and met the Lord Mayor of Westminster.”

The St George’s Day party were joined by special guest Haslemere mayor Sahran Abeysundara and his consort, Howard Bicknell.

Mr Coakley added: “Sahran was whisked off to join the front rank in the procession, the first row of wreath layers and thence to the saluting dais where he took the salute of 600 cadets from the Navy, Army and Air Force, piped along by a band from the Air Training Corps in London.”

After the parade, the party adjourned to Westminster Abbey for a short service around the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior with prayers led by the Assistant Dean of Westminster Abbey and with a further wreath laid by The Royal Society’s national chairman Joanna Cadnam.

The following day saw 14 branch members meeting for its traditional “Roast Beef of Old England” lunch at The Georgian Hotel, preceded by a short service at the War Memorial, where town crier Christian Ashdown roused everyone in his “usual style”.

The raffle winner will receive six bottles of fizz with six more going to Wey Hill’s Mirabelle Tea Shop, which sold the lucky ticket.
