Shoppers have been given a bitter pill to swallow as a national chain is pulling out of Alton town centre.

The Holland & Barrett store in Westbrook Walk is closing today (Wednesday, August 12) with the health and wellbeing retailer citing “changing shopping patterns and evolving high streets” in its decision.

Some workers might be relocated as the firm is “working closely” with affected staff to explore redevelopment wherever possible.

Shoppers have been thanked for their support in the meantime with customers being directed to their Farnham store or the website.

A spokesperson for Holland & Barrett said the closure is part of a £70million investment which has resulted in new store openings, refurbishments and relocations – but also in some lease expirations and closures.

“The decisions focused on ensuring we are operating from the right locations to best serve customers both in-store and online,” said a spokesperson for the firm.

“Over the past three years, we have significantly expanded and upgraded our UK and Ireland footprint through new locations and refitted stores, while continuing to adapt to changing shopping patterns and evolving high streets.

“We remain committed to maintaining a strong presence across the UK and Ireland, backed by continued investment in both our physical stores and digital offer, and ongoing international expansion.

“Alongside this, we continue to expand our health and wellness offering through wellness training, in-store services, diagnostics partnerships and collaborations designed to make preventative health support more accessible for customers.”

The spokesperson added: “We recognise the impact some of the store transformation decisions may have on colleagues.

“Our priority is to retain colleagues within the business and we are working closely with the small number affected to explore redeployment opportunities wherever possible.”

The departure leaves TG Jones as the sole remaining national chain in Westbrook Walk.
