IN a potentially risky move, Waverley will ask the planning inspector to suspend the public examination of its "failed" core strategy rather than withdrawing it and starting from scratch.

Waverley executive will be asked on Tuesday to agree a recommendation that will, hopefully, enable the council to salvage its draft planning blueprint for the next 15 years by producing an up-to-date assessment of housing needs that the inspector Michael Hetherington stated was a key requirement.

Waverley's Core Strategy failed to survive the first day of public examination on June 5. After calling a halt to proceedings due to his "substantial concerns" on the plan's approach to meeting housing needs, Mr Hetherington has given the council three alternative courses of action.
