AN appeal to save the picturesque 19th-century boathouse at Winkworth Arboretum near Godalming has been launched by the National Trust.
It will cost £45,000 to repair the local landmark commanding the lake for future generations to enjoy.
Pre-dating the arboretum itself, the timbered building has withstood storms, played host to weddings and film crews, and provided a tiny haven of tranquillity for thousands of visitors over many years, and visitors can admire a panoramic sweep of water and woodland from its balcony.
Mike Smyth, assistant visitor services manager, said: “All historic buildings need looking after, especially wooden ones on a lake.
“We want to repair the foundations, wall plate and some of the timbers to keep the boathouse at its best for the future. We know it’s a very special place for so many of our visitors and hope that people will support us in caring for it.
“Help us look after this special place – even donating just £1 via our raffle will make a difference.
“Why not drop your spare change into the collection box by the boathouse, or visit our website to donate.
“If you’re considering giving a large gift, we’d love to hear from you at Winkworth Arboretum.”
