EMERGENCY frontline worker Professor Richard Lyon has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list announced at the weekend.
Honoured for services to emergency healthcare, Professor Lyon is associate medical director at the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust. He has worked with the airborne 999 service since 2012 and heads its research and development programme, including pre-hospital blood transfusion and pre-hospital anaesthesia.
Professor Lyon (pictured), who also volunteers with the British Association of Immediate Care responding to accidents and life-threatening emergencies, said he was humbled to receive the award.
He said: “Working on the frontline of emergency medicine for over a decade, I have seen life at its extremes – both cruel and kind. I have been lucky enough to care for some of the bravest patients and their families and I am privileged to work with paramedics, doctors, pilots and nurses of the very highest calibre on a daily basis.”
In addition, he has been University of Surrey’s chairman of pre-hospital emergency care since March 2016.
His expertise has been recognised with top research awards from the European Resuscitation Council and the British Medical Journal, and his academic work builds upon a successful career in pre-hospital medical practice,
Mr Lyon was one of the head doctors at the London 2012 Olympic Games. In 2015, he was sent to Nepal following the earthquake as part of his role with the UK International Search and Rescue Team.
