WAVERLEY Borough Council has announced a new crack-down on council tax fraud.
Checks are to be carried out on all single person discounts on council tax given to residents who are the only adult occupant in a property.
Residents who receive the 25 per cent discount will soon receive letters asking them to confirm or update the information the council has about their circumstances.
Ged Hall, Waverley’s portfolio holder for finance, said: “While many people pay the right amount of council tax there are a minority who attempt to wrongly claim a discount.
“We take council tax fraud very seriously and make sure that discounts are given to the people who need it most.
“The review will ensure that the right people receive the discount and will help keep council tax as low as possible for residents.”
