A FARNHAM Brownie and Guide group have achieved their Blue Peter Green Badge.

1st Bourne Brownies and 1st Bourne Guides spent a few weeks completing several challenges to become climate heroes to achieve their badges.

Home challenges required them to complete three of the following four activities for two weeks:

* Complete a water diary and identify ways to save water within the home;

* Make lunches every day using fully-recyclable materials and no single-use plastic;

* Take part in family recycling within the home and reuse items where possible – make new from old;

* Plant or scatter seeds to encourage pollination.

The girls had to keep a diary of one week’s activities, and take refillable water bottles to their meetings.

They completed some activities during meetings, such as making beeswax wraps, upcycling clothes by making new outfits out of old ones, and making garden light reflectors out of recycled CDs and hangers to hang in their gardens to detract birds from eating growing crops.

The beeswax for the wraps was supplied by Little Green Bees, which is based in Farnham.

1st Bourne assistant leader Julie Postgate said: “We’re immensely proud of the girls. They had lots to do and all worked so very hard. We’ve had feedback from parents saying the girls have been inspired and kept going.

“One girl asked her dad to fix a leaking tap!”

1st Bourne has 100 girls across four sections – Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers.

Blue Peter age limits meant only the Brownies and Guides could achieve their green badges, which are open to children between six and 15 years old.
