COUNCILLORS on a Waverley committee responsible for bringing “independent, effective assurance to the council’s corporate governance” have voted against broadcasting meetings online.

Waverley currently ‘webcasts’ an array of its meetings for the public to watch via the council’s YouTube channel, including those of the full council, executive, planning, overview and scrutiny and licensing committees - but not yet its audit committee.

According to the draft minutes of the audit committee, on November 20, members “discussed the positives and negatives of webcasting meetings”.

But they voted in favour of committee chairman John Gray’s recommendation that meetings “not be webcast at the current time”.

Farnham Residents councillor Jerry Hyman was the sole audit committee member to vote in favour of the webcasts, with the remaining four Tory members opting to “review the situation” in six months’ time.
