GOVERNMENT planning reforms are unnecessarily damaging the countryside and undermining local democracy, according to a new report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

The 'Community Control or Countryside Chaos?' report analyses the impact of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in the two years since it was simplified from more than 1,000 pages to just 50.

It concludes the countryside surrounding towns and villages across England is "under siege" by plans for more than 700,000 homes, including 200,000 allocated for the Green Belt, which councils are "powerless" to prevent.
