A developer has withdrawn plans for a 55-home estate on the southern edge of Petersfield amid criticism from planners.

It appears Thakeham Homes Ltd would have struggled to get permission for the estate between The Causeway and the southern end of Larcombe Road.

Landscape officers at the South Downs National Park Authority felt the proposals would result in an “intense and car-dominated” development with little open space and too many cul-de-sacs.

They also claimed the proposals for the 5.29-acre site could be compared to an “anywhere development”, with the applicant strongly disagreeing.

Half the housing on the site, which is earmarked for development in the Petersfield Neighbourhood Plan, would have been affordable if the proposals were approved.
