HASLEMERE school St Ives has joined Camelsdale Primary School to become the second school in England to be affiliated to The Royal Society of St George.

Town mayor of Haslemere Malcom Carter and his consort Sandie Carter joined St Ives headteacher Kay Goldsworthy at the presentation of the RSSG affiliation certificate and plaque by the society’s chairman Joanna Cadman, who is also a Haslemere branch member.

Pupils told assembled guests what they knew about England’s patron saint, St George, and also showed off their musical talents in performances on the piano, flute, cornets and as solo singers or as choirs from each age group.

“This affiliation between the RSSG and St Ives School is a truly historic moment,” society trustee Shirley Hankers said.

“The RSSG is looking forward to joining forces with St Ives School in many patriotic events.

“The children demonstrated their knowledge by reminding us of the aims of the RSSG and its respect for all things English.

“History teaches us how to behave better with our fellow man, to honour those who have helped our country, and to appreciate the value of the commonwealth and importantly, respect for our monarchy.

“The RSSG looks forward to welcoming St Ives pupils alongside pupils from Camelsdale Primary School and members of the RSSG, at the RSSG annual cadet parade and service, where they will lay a wreath of red roses at The Cenotaph in London.’

The parade is held on the closest Saturday to St George’s Day. This year it will be April 21, which is also The Queen’s 92nd birthday.

The parade is followed by a service at the Tomb of The Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey.
