Farnham Library looks set to relocate from its historic home off West Street to the Brightwells Yard development, Surrey County Council leader Tim Oliver has told a meeting of town representatives.

Cllr Oliver confirmed it was “likely” the library will move from the western to the eastern end of the town centre in a recent meeting of the Farnham Visitors Forum.

It is understood the county council wants to combine three commercial units opposite the former Marlborough Head pub, where Brightwells Yard meets East Street.

Interest in these units in the alleyway between East Street and the ‘Old Market Place’ new town square has reportedly been limited.

The library’s potential relocation to Brightwells has long been mooted by the likes of Farnham Town Council and the Farnham Society. But Cllr Oliver’s comments represent the first time the library’s owners have signalled the move in public.

The county council’s intentions for the present library building, and the attached Vernon House  where there are several tenants including charity Creative Response and the Surrey Register Office, are as yet unknown.
