DESPITE the rain, crowds flocked to Haslemere Museum’s first firework and bonfire night last Thursday.

Museum curator Julia Tanner said: “It was a lovely family orientated evening.

“We were absolutely delighted by the success of the event and the numbers we attracted took us all by surprise!”

Alongside the fireworks display created by Firebird Entertainment, visitors were treated to a bonfire carefully built, maintained and stewarded by voluteers, Colin Dodge, Phil Bates and Keith Hancock. The ceremonial lighting of the bonfire was performed by mayor Melanie Odell at 8pm.

The inaugural event was held on Guy Fawkes night itself and there was hot food, refreshments and mulled wine to keep everyone warm on a very wet night.

Museum premises manager Nicholas Harding who organised the event, added: “There was such a feeling of goodwill, amongst the many volunteers, staff and trustees all working together to help make this event happen in a safe environment.

“We had a lovely crowd and everyone seemed to have a really good time.

“I would like to thank not only everyone involved in delivering such a great event but all those who turned up to support it.”
