Hoisted into place by the town’s firefighters and ‘launched’ by mayor Sahran Abeysundara, is ‘Have a Butchers’ – a beautiful moo designed with food in mind.
Commanding the grassy plot in front to the town hall, the fibreglass cow is one of a trio sponsored by Waitrose and the design was dreamed up by artist Diana Boyle of Rooftop Illustrations.
She said: “‘Have a Butchers’ is inspired by different cuts of beef, and interpreted using a bright and bold colour spectrum across a variety of typographic styles.”
CowParade, the world’s largest public art event, will see lots of brightly decorated fibreglass cows placed in popular landmarks across the county during the summer.
Each one is sponsored by a business, school or charity and decorated by a local artist. The cows are being “put out to graze” and dotted around Surrey until the end of August, and a specially designed app is free to download that allows each one to be collected virtually.
Those who find all the cows will be entered into a prize draw to win a luxury Kuoni holiday for two to Mauritius.
A Waitrose spokesman said: “We’re delighted to be supporting CowParade and are delighted to see the beautifully decorated cows grazing outside our shops in Surrey.
“Our customers are sure to be intrigued by each of the designs and we hope they’ll be inspired to download the app and find all of the other cows in the area.”
The cows will be auctioned off for charity in Spetember. Waitrose has nominated the Princes Countryside Trust to benefit from the auction proceeds of their three cows.
The charity established by The Prince of Wales, in 2010, exists to improve the prospects of family farm businesses and the quality of rural life.
The Surrey Hills Trust Fund will also benefit from the auction of ‘Have a Butchers’. Established in partnership with the Community Foundation for Surrey, the Surrey Hills Trust Fund helps to conserve and protect the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, supporting local community projects and enterprise schemes that benefit and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape.
