AN ambitious project by Haslemere Town Council to commemorate its WWI heroes during the centenary of Armistice in 2018 has come to fruition.

To honour those named on the war memorials at Grayswood, Haslemere, Hindhead and Shottermill, the council has located where they or their relatives lived 100 years ago.

Councillors will visit the houses in the coming days with a personalised wreath and ask the owners if it can be hung on the roadside, visible to the public.

On Remembrance Sunday, the householders will be invited to attend the relevant church and to lay their wreaths. A grand total of 145 personalised wreaths have been created and will be seen over the four war memorials.

Haslemere Mayor David Round said: “Many hours of research have gone into this project and we are particularly grateful to Shirley Harrison and Oliver Hartley for their assistance.

“There are still some names that we cannot link to a property and we would like to hear from anyone who can help us.

“We also want to invite any living relatives to contact us so they can be at the apropriate ceremony.”
