MORE than 360 people took part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile mounted by Waverley Borough Council, at Frensham Great Pond and Common, on Sunday.

Waverley Mayor Mike Band along with the Waverley Wolf mascot met former Wimbledon and Watford striker Marcus Gayle and they cheered on participants, who ran either one, three or six miles to help raise life-changing funds for people in need.

The first runner across the finish line was nine year-old Thomas Le Marchant, who ran three miles.

Waverley countryside apprentice Philippa Manuel, who helps maintain the common as part of her job, also completed three miles dressed as a tree.

Mr Band said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part and thanks to all of the volunteers – without their help the event would not be possible. It really was an amazing day. It was brilliant to cheer everyone on, hand out medals and see the smiling faces of milers completing the course.

“It is heart-warming that the community came together to support a great cause, which will help people in need here in the UK and in some of the world’s poorest countries.”
