AN inspirational 11-year-old from Grayswood is scaling the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco to raise money for Frensham-based Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity.

Aston is dyslexic and is rising to the challenge to raise money and awareness for the life-changing support the charity provides for bright children, who struggle every day because of special educational needs.

Already a seasoned mountaineer, he completed the UK Three Peaks Challenge before he was ten and is now doing altitude training in preparation for his expedition in May.

The two-day trek will take him through the long mountain range that separates the Atlantic coast from the Sahara desert to the highest peak Jebel Toubkal, weather permitting, at 4067 metres. His family and climbing club will be with him all the way.

Aston’s mum Dawn said: “It’s amazing a boy of primary school age cares enough to do something for the community and raising awareness about actions people can take. He wants to do what he can to save others from struggling.

“We are very proud of Aston for wanting to take on such a big challenge at his young age and selflessly raise money for a cause close to his heart.

“We are helping him by being alongside the whole way for support and to make sure he can succeed. There will be a team, which includes myself, country porters, a head porter and mule.”

Aston told the Herald: “I’m doing the climb for the fun, the thrill and the charity. I’m doing it for Helen Arkell so more people can access the support they need, because this was difficult for me when I was very young and started school.

“I really enjoy the challenge climbing presents – it always seems impossible until it’s done. You just have to keep going.”
