WAVERLEY planning officers are recommending outline plans to build 20 homes at Witley’s Wheeler Street Nurseries are given the green light.

The recommendation is subject to imposing a condition securing affordable housing and a contribution to education, a sports pitch and play improvements.

The proposed development would occupy 1.7 acres of the site in Wheeler Street, with the rest remaining a wholesale nursery.

Witley Parish Council has backed protests by 13 residents and urged members of Waverley’s central area planning committee to refuse the plan on Wednesday.

The council objected that the access and sightline were “wholly inadequate and unsafe”, traffic surveys were not appropriate and surface draining problems would be exacerbated.

Supporting the scheme, the applicant Haslemere-based Castle Land and Development said: Witley was “one of the most sustainable locations in the borough.

Waverley’s housing strategy officer highlighted the shortage of affordable housing.
