PRIZED shells at Haslemere Museum provided the inspiration for a half-term arts and crafts session
Two notable shell collectors bequeathed their treasures to the museum – Robert Henson Moses (1871-1949) left the museum a large collection of worldwide marine, land, and freshwater shells, while Reverend William Eyre donated British land and fresh water shells in 1914.
As part of the Whitsun half-term event, museum education officer Kay Topping introduced its shell-handling collection and explained all the fascinating ways shells have been used in the past.
Those attending then enjoyed getting hands-on with their subject matter in an arts and crafts session that including making their very own shell creature and a place for it to live.
Kay said: “It was lovely to see the different generations of families learning and being creative together.
“The children had a great time and it is so rewarding to be able to teach them little bits of information while they have fun creating. The museum has a wonderful tradition of learning and the diverse collections provide a vast range of materials to inspire all age groups.
“We offer a lively programme of events throughout the year which provide inspiration and enjoyment for all the family and vital funds for the museum.”
