PUT your best foot forwards for new sports event The Surrey Hills Challenge, a series of running and walking events through and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in September.
Suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, it offers four different challenges: ‘
The Ultra – a 60km run,
The Half – over 21km
The Ten – spanning 10km or
The Five – a family challenge 5km event.
The Ultra route starts in Haslemere, at 9am, and follows the Greensand Way, taking in The Devil’s Punch Bowl, Gibbet Hill, Wormley Hill, Hydon’s Ball, Hascombe Hill, Pitch Hill, Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill and finally Bury Hill.
The event is being held on Sunday, September 25, in aid of the Community Foundation for Surrey and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund.
Not for the faint-hearted, the total climb is the equivalent of ascending Mount Snowdon.
Family events The Five and The Ten will take place at Hurtwood and start at 10am. The Five is a 5km course which covers wide open tracks, footpaths and woodland trails. The Ten is two laps of the 5km course.
The Half, which also starts at 9am, joins The Ultra at the Duke of Kent School and scales Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill, the highest point along the Greensand Way at 954ft. Both are mainly on footpaths and bridle paths with only occasional road sections or crossings, and with Dorking as the finish.
As well as support from a dedicated events team before and during the event, participants will also receive a medal, chip timing, aid stations, professional first aid cover, car parking, toilet facilities and sports massage.
The event is to raise funds for the Community Foundation for Surrey and the Surrey Hills Trust Fund.
Fundraising isn’t compulsory but everyone is urged to take up the additional challenge to fundraise and support local communities.
A suggest fundraising target to aim for is £250 per person.
Half the money raised will support the Community Foundation for Surrey and the other half will help to conserve the unique Surrey Hills countryside.
The Community Foundation for Surrey is an independent charitable trust established to inspire local giving for local need.
It has already supported more than 1,800 local projects by awarding grants to fund community and voluntary groups who are making a difference locally.
The Community Foundation established the Surrey Hills Trust Fund to help projects and community groups within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Those raising funds by participating in the Surrey Hills Challenge will enable the Trust Fund to support the people who live, work and enjoy the area.
Registration for The Ultra costs £80; £35 for The Half and £25 for the Ten while The Five costs £15.
A booking fee of £2 per registration is applicable.
Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.
