Three-way traffic lights were already in operation at the junction causing lengthy delays, due to pavement improvements in Shepherds Hill being carried out by Surrey Couty Council as part of an enhancement scheme.
Cordoning off the affected area narrowed the major junction even more causing more traffic misery.
Haslemere county councillor Nikki Barton said: “A hole one metre wide and two metres deep opened up in the carriageway at the bottom of Shepherds Hill. Emergency crew have been called out to investigate but at the moment we do not know what caused it.”
