STAFF from Grayshott Spa are the latest to get on their bikes for Canine Partners’ Pedal for Paws charity cycling challenge.

The event on Saturday, October 9, will see dozens of cyclists ride 16, 29 or 52 miles through the South Downs National Park to raise money to help provide assistance dogs which transform the lives of people living with disabilities.

Oliver Leach, leading the hotel team, was inspired to take part for his best friend Richard Runalls’ dad Ian, who has one of Canine Partners’ specially trained dogs.

The grandad-of-three was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when he was 29 which eventually forced him to give up his job.

Then Canine Partners’ Grayson arrived. The black labrador cross golden retriever boosted his independence by helping with tasks such as taking off his coat and shoes, fetching his bag, emptying the washing machine and picking up anything he drops.

Ian, now 69, a dad-of-two from Gosport, and his wife Marion now live with Ian’s second canine partner Kelsey.

Oliver, 34, from Lindford, said: “The dog is a lifeline to Ian. Not just through what she does for him but also by being there and by being his best friend. It gives him some freedom and support that he can do what he wants and he doesn’t have to rely on his wife as much. It gives him back his independence.

“Taking part in a challenge like Pedal for Paws is a good team-building exercise. Events like this bring the team together and it gives you a good feeling.”

Oliver will be joined on the challenge by reservations supervisor Cristian Males, receptionist Sorin Clemintine and restaurant supervisor Flo Balan from Grayshott, and membership manager Tina Laing from Haslemere, who all work at Grayshott Spa.

Joining them is Anne Marie Greenway from Haslemere and Pip Stamp, a chauffeur from Grayshott.

There is still time to sign up for the event based at Canine Partners’ Southern Centre in Mill Lane, Heyshott, near Midhurst from 9am. It costs £20 for adults or £10 for children in advance, £30 and £15 on the day plus sponsorship.

Dogs cannot take part and children must be accompanied. For details contact Sian Wilson on 01730 716110 or sianw@canine partners.org.uk or visit caninepartners. org.uk/event/pedal-for-paws.
