SURREY Police has set out plans to become carbon neutral by 2030 – an earlier target date than that of Surrey County Council and the UK Government.

A strategy to meet the target is being developed by the force’s environmental board.

This includes reducing transport emissions and waste, and the move from Mount Browne, Guildford, to a new headquarters and operational base in Leatherhead.

Energy-reduction targets are also being put in place to cut the force’s use of gas, electricity and water.

Surrey County Council declared a climate emergency in July, pledging to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Eight of the 11 borough and district councils in the county – including Waverley, which like the police has set a 2030 target – have since followed suit.

David Munro, police and crime commissioner for Surrey, said: “Climate change affects everyone and as an organisation employing more than 4,000 people, I firmly believe we have a responsibility in ensuring we play our part in policing to protect the environment we live in.”
