RETIREES in Surrey have the largest pension pots in the UK according to a leading UK pension specialist.

Portal Financial analysed the pension savings of almost 2,000 of its customers and created a retirement savings index detailing the average pension by county and major towns.

Surrey residents top the retirement savings index with an average pension fund size of £87,947.

Fund size also varied by town, with an average of £107,443 in Haslemere, £82,884 in Farnham, £79,998 in Godalming and a table-topping £430,469 in Banstead.

The average pension pot size in neighbouring Hampshire is £56,369, while the national average is £63,387.

Jamie Smith-Thompson, Portal Financial managing director, said: “The map gives an interesting insight into the saving habits of retirees across the country.

“Southern counties have the greatest pensioner affluence as do some of the popular seaside and countryside locations such as Dorset or Northumberland. However, what is clear is that many pensioners have fairly modest pension pots available to them at retirement.”
