VISITORS poured into the National Trust’s Swan Barn Farm, in Haslemere, to enjoy the fruits of their labours at its annual Community apple pressing day, on Saturday.
As well as those bringing in their own apples for pressing into juice, many came to enjoy the harvest and join in the fun as the National Trust rangers pressed this year’s crop from the Swan Barn orchard, which will also be turned into artisan cider.
David Elliott, head ranger at Black Down, said: “It went very well, we had lots of people and lots of apples and were really pleased.
“The event is getting better known and many more people are coming, especially kids.
“The idea is to get people interested in apple trees and to understand the value of orchards.
“We extended our orchard last year at the back of the High Street with 12 new trees, which are a real mix of the traditional, very rare and modern.
“Some of our apple trees cropped quite well this year, but we didn’t have many pears due to the cold weather in the spring.
“People came along carrying their own apples in sacks, buckets and all sorts.”
