FEELINGS of isolation, loneliness and depression can be heightened at Christmas and support for vulnerable Surrey teenagers and young adults is provided by “I Need Help” – a dedicated helpline and email service.

It offers a listening and support service in a safe, non-judgemental environment which is free, confidential and anonymous.

The main focus is on 14 to 25 year olds and callers and emailers are often experiencing serious problems that affect their emotional well-being and mental health.

For those who have suffered a family break up, or whose relationship with their family has broken down, Christmas can be particularly challenging and difficult to cope with.

Helpline volunteers are trained to listen and support callers and to help them acknowledge the challenges they face, understand how they are being affected and consider their available options.

Helpline manager Tracy Pizzanelli said: “We regularly get calls from people who to the outside world appear to be living happy and balanced lives, but who in reality, are struggling every day.

“We often support callers and emailers with an on-going situation, as well as those who need help and support at a particular time. Christmas is one of our busiest times of year and it is our aim to help those in need of support and provide an outlet for them to express their emotions.

“One anonymous caller in November told us it took quite a lot of guts to call the helpline, but they were so pleased they did, because they were just listened to and that made them feel calmer about the situation.”

The helpline has a database of more than 700 organisations – both local and national – which can be accessed via its service. Volunteers listen, support, respond and provide callers with details of other local organisations that offer specific services.

“Anyone worried about a teenager or young adult, who doesn’t know where to turn, can also contact the helpline for support.

“I Need Help” is staffed daily from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, for calls and emails via Freephone 0800 141 2055 or by emailing support@ineedhelp. org. uk

It is part of FamilyLine and the National Association of Helplines and is supported by Surrey County Council and local borough and district councils.
