FEARS that Grayswood Women’s Institute could bite the dust after nearly 100 years at the centre of village life have fortunately proved to be unfounded.

The branch was suspended in January 2017 after 97 years when it failed to fill enough places on the committee.

But a sudden upsurge in interest has relaunched the village WI in a big way.

A post enquiring about local branches on the Haslemere Community Board two months ago was spotted by previous Grayswood WI secretary Heather Laybourne, who promptly responded saying the group could be revived if there was interest.

Countless ladies responded, more than 20 of whom gathered at The Wheatsheaf Inn to express their interest.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic support, a revival meeting was held on March 13 at Grayswood Village Hall with a guest speaker .

More than 60 supporters, including past members, packed inside to hear new Grayswood WI president Jo Shaw give an insight into the branch’s near-century, before handing over to Kate Owens, who stepped in at very short notice to share her story of founding Verdley Flowers.

Revivalists enjoyed more drinks and homemade cake while studying the branch’s history table and events programme.

Jo said: “In a digital world, it is so refreshing to see so many women wanting to meet up and talk face to face, make new friends and learn new skills. With such a diverse range of ages and interests, we are sure to enjoy a very varied event programme.”

The branch will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 7.45pm at Grayswood Village Hall. The next meeting is on Wednesday, April 10, and all past, potential and new members are welcome. To join, e-mail [email protected].
