the A3 Hindhead Tunnel is to be closed every night this week as more work to eliminate some of the technical glitches that have hit its operation over the past year is carried out.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “There will be a full closure to carry out an upgrade to the technology in the Hindhead Tunnel. This is to enhance the reliability of the control system that is used to effect safe driver behaviour, if an incident occurs.

“Unfortunately, the only way to implement this improvement safely is to close the tunnel completely whilst the works are ongoing.

The agency is urging drivers to allow an extra 45 minutes for their journey and has apologised for any inconvenience it may cause.

During the closures, from Monday, June 13, to Friday, June 17 and which will run each night from 9pm till approximately 6am the next day, signed diversions will be in place via the A325 and A31 for both north and southbound traffic.
