HASLEMERE started slowly in this Hampshire Div 1 match and took time to adjust to the bouncy pitch.

Basingstoke kept them under pressure for most of the first half and a short corner resulted in the first goal, with keeper Sarah Elworthy unlucky to keep the ball out.

Strikers Di Powell and Jules Bernays worked tirelessly throughout the game, but there were not many attacking opportunities for Haslemere.

Basingstoke were physical and Jess Edwards got a shoulder in the face. And despite some patient link-up play from Haslemere, a quickly-taken free-hit outside the D took a kind deflection and Basingstoke had a 2-0 lead.

Haslemere soldiered on, maintaining possession well and keeping their composure. They won a short corner in the last minute and Heidi Wells struck home from the top of the D for a deserved goal.

Haslemere look forward to the return match at Woolmer Hill.
