Alton manager Kevin Adair was delighted with his side’s response to exiting the League Cup as they bounced back with a 2-1 win at Camberley Town in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday afternoon.

Adair had publicly questioned some of his players after the 3-0 cup defeat against North Greenford United last Tuesday night, but he was delighted with the response at Camberley.

The Brewers took the lead through Trevor Caborn’s goal, but they were pegged back in the second half through Gianluca Botti’s equaliser.

However, Josh Buchan’s 90th-minute winner gave Adair’s side the three points.

“We’ve conceded late goals before so we know how that feels, but we’re delighted to be on the other end of it,” said Adair.

“Camberley are the sort of team we’ve really got to be getting points against, and that now puts us ten points clear of the bottom two. The pitch was in a good state for the time of year and it was a decent surface to play on. We played with the hill in the first half and got on top of them.

“The first goal came from a lovely ball from Ed Dryden, and Trevor made a great run and shot into the corner.

“We could have been two up, but we missed some chances and we knew Camberley would come out strongly in the second half. They had a 15-minute spell and got the equaliser.

“It would have been easy for the players to then go against what they are told to do, but they stuck to the tactics and were excellent.

“Josh came on and got the winner. He is a young lad who has just come into the squad recently – he’s probably got his chance sooner than he expected and we expected.”

Next up for Alton is a home game against Tadley Calleva in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday (3pm), and Adair is expecting a tough encounter.

“We were disappointed to lose at Tadley,” he said. “They’re a good side, but being at home we’ll look to take the game to them.”
